So với việc tạo CD ảo để chơi game không cần CD thì phần mềm Game Jackal tỏ ra tiện lợi, nhanh chóng hơn và ít tốn dung lượng đĩa cứng hơn.
Ngoài việc sử dụng một chương trình có khả năng tạo đĩa ảo như Alcohol hay Virtual Drive, còn có một cách khác để chơi game không cần CD thuận tiện hơn, ít tốn đĩa hơn, đó là dùng chương trình Game Jackal.
Cách thức hoạt động của Game Jackal như sau: khi một game được kích hoạt, nó sẽ đòi hỏi một số thông tin từ CD để khởi động game, lúc này Game Jackal sẽ lưu lại những thông tin ấy vào một hồ sơ riêng tương ứng với mỗi game (chỉ mất vài chục đến vài trăm KB cho mỗi game) để rồi vào lần chạy tiếp theo, chính Game Jackal sẽ cung cấp cho game các thông tin này chứ không phải là CD nữa, chính vì thế mà bạn không cần phải dùng đến CD gốc hay CD ảo.
Cách sử dụng:
Trước hết bạn phải lấy (eject) toàn bộ các ổ CD (cả thực lẫn ảo) có trong máy.
Khởi động Game Jackal, chọn Create a profile, chọn ổ đĩa mà bạn sẽ bỏ CD vào để play game. Nhấp Next.
Chọn những profile có sẵn của chương trình, nếu không có profile của game bạn đang chơi thì bạn chọn No Profile Map Selected rồi nhấp Next.
Đặt tên cho profile, chọn Next.
Nhấp chọn Locate title và chỉ đường dẫn đến file thực thi (có đuôi .exe) của game. Để đảm bảo hơn, trong phần Advanced options, ở khung Working Directory bạn hãy chỉ đường dẫn đến thư mục cài đặt game.
Mục Profiler mode nên chọn Automatic mode, sau đó cho CD vào ổ đĩa để hoàn tất.
Lúc này bạn sẽ thấy game được kích hoạt. Như vậy là từ nay bạn sẽ không cần đến CD nữa, mỗi lần muốn chạy game chỉ cần nhấp vào biểu tượng của Game Jackal ở thanh taskbar và chọn game mình muốn chơi là xong.
Ngoài ra bạn còn có thể tạo shortcut cho game để dễ dàng kích hoạt bằng cách nhấp chọn Create desktop shortcut. Nếu có kết nối Internet, bạn có thể update profile cho Game Jackal.
— Một số lưu ý:
- Khi chạy một game bằng Game Jackal, bạn phải nhớ chọn Deactivate profile (ở cửa sổ chính) để ngưng kích hoạt profile của game đã chạy trước đó.
- Trong cửa sổ chính của chương trình, mục View profile key sẽ hiển thị cho bạn một dãy số. Đây chính là mã số của các profile mà bạn đã tạo, bạn nên ghi lại dãy số này để sau này khi cài đặt lại GJ bạn có thể sử dụng lại các profile cũ
